Why Swindon Gutters Block Every Autumn (And What It Costs You)

Leaf fall, moss from north-facing roofs and shallow ogee guttering are why so many Swindon homes overflow in October. Here is how to stay ahead of it.

Every autumn we get the same call from across Swindon: water pouring over the front gutter during the first heavy rain. It is almost never a broken gutter. It is a season of leaves, roof moss and grit sitting in a channel that only holds a few centimetres of water.

What actually blocks a Swindon gutter

Three things, usually together:

  1. Leaf fall. Streets like Cricklade Road, Old Town and the older parts of Stratton have mature trees that drop straight onto rooflines.
  2. Roof moss. North-facing tiles grow moss through the damp months, and every downpour washes fragments into the gutter where they pack down solid.
  3. Roofing grit. Older concrete tiles shed a fine grit that settles into a sludge at the low end of the run.

What it costs if you leave it

An overflowing gutter soaks the wall below. On rendered elevations that shows as a green streak within a season, and on older brick it can push damp inside. Fascia boards rot, and a full roofline replacement runs into four figures. A gutter clear is a fraction of that.

The right rhythm

For most Swindon homes, once a year in late autumn is enough. Under heavy trees, twice a year, spring and late autumn. If your roof has visible moss, treat the roof as well, otherwise you are clearing the same debris again next year.

How we do it

We vacuum from the ground with carbon-fibre poles and a camera, so nothing leans against your home and you see before-and-after footage of every run. We also flow-check the downpipes, because a clear gutter feeding a blocked downpipe still overflows.
